Magazine - Feature Articles

Kerrang! Have a younger target audience, so using ‘you me at six!’ appeals to the younger audience (average 22, with most of their readers between 15 and 24 years old) The theme of the magazine is a rough rock look, appearing edgy and chaotic, fitting with the theme of rock music and the overall design of the magazine. It is a similar look as the colour scheme is similar to the contents page, whereas the front cover design is more 'busy' and aggressive. It is a different look to the front cover but still recognisable as it looks like a Kerrang! article. The use of a band as the main image, with other music related images also fits with the front cover design. The connotations of the article make you think of something either happy or aggressive as of the facial expressions of the band members, also we link dark colours with something intimidating, 'dark' or scary, so the colours used in the article are meant to frighten or patronise the reader, but at the same time, idolising the band making them appear cool and appealing to their fans.
The band are a rock band, so the dark colours and uses of red for danger show that they want to look scary or 'cool' to their audience. The word "Exclusive" makes the reader feel that there is something new and exclusive about the band that they feel a need to find out about. The article is full of text and bold writing which show the bands bold, 'in your face' appearance, which could link to the style of their music.
The purpose of this article is to inform and to entertain the reader, updating them with any information they they feel they need to know about specific bands, genres, tours or any other information they need. A more specific purpose to this article is to make the reader know about the band, making them look a certain way for example, fun, interesting, and happy.
They want to gain for fans through featuring in a popular magazine's article, to make more money by selling songs.
The article was written informally, directed at the readers to persuade and tell them to listen to the artists. The words "This is a comeback" show us they they have released something new and are coming back with something special, this is to reintroduce the audience with the band again. The words are written in bold, capitals to directly shout at, and inform the reader.
The artists were represented as reformed and appear to look good and attractive as their photo takes up about two thirds of the article. They are represented as popular and enthusiastic artists, who are dressed well, and appear to look successful. Their intention was to look good and draw in more fans and their old fans as they are on a comeback from a potential downfall or not as successful career, so they're getting back into the music business so they need to look good to appeal to their target audience.
The tone of the article was semi-aggressive, with bold, capital letters, and colours that represent aggression, danger, or warning. The images are similar colours to the text boxes, colours and fonts so it fits well and looks good, which is good for appealing to the target audience.

The second magazine feature article is from the magazine Q. At first glance, the magazine article looks visually attractive, the double page spread shows one page with a fun photo of a band, all looking happy with positive emotions; and the other page has a whole page of writing. Despite most of the page is taken up by writing, this isn't an overwhelming amount as a whole of the second page is taken up by a large image. The layout is neat, and the colours used are black, red, white, which when put together in the Q layout look calm and readable. The drop-cap is in the Q style, but reversed, so the red part is white, and the white part is red, this is to make the article recognisable and so people could guess that it is from Q without looking at the front cover. Along with the noticeable fonts and colours, the layout looks neat and the smart look appears attractive. The magazines audience are 15-24 which are a group of people who are young, and perhaps don't want to be reading pages on pages of writing, so a page with 80% text is enough text to keep them engaged.
The overall visual design of the magazine makes the reader feel happy, enticed, and happy to read the whole article. Usually the colours red and black link with warning, danger, death and other negative connotations, the use of the colours with a calm photo with neat layout makes the magazine look formal and smart. The magazine is directed at the younger audience so isn't actually formal, but looks appealing and would maybe appeal to music fans, whereas Mojo and Kerrang! appeal to fans who are obsessed with music.
The design fits with the artist as the theme is laid back, relaxed and calm, along with the bands image where there is nothing too serious happening and they all look happy. As well as looking attractive, the bands intention is to promote themselves and to perhaps make a comeback or an announcement about a new update. The articles purpose is to inform and entertain the reader or fans about things they feel they need or want to know. The images fit really well as the style is similar to the magazine and article style, and the overall look is attractive and easy to read.

The last article is Mojo, which is a magazine made for music obsessed fans, whereas Q and Kerrang! are for people who have an interest in particular bands or artists, and like music. Mojo has an older audience compared to the other two magazines, so the layout of the feature article will be different to them. At first we look at the article and like Q, one page is for the text and the other purely for the image. The article looks strange at first, with dim colours and blurry pictures that we can’t see at first glance. This gives an eerie feel to the magazine, and we take a closer look and see a band on the photo, this may be to do with the bands style but will be recognisable to fans of the artist. Overall visually, the feature article is artistic and different to many other designs, but would be good if it connects with the artist shown on the image page, the colour scheme and dark theme may link to the genre of music by the band and relate to the fans. The connotations of the dark grey and blue theme is danger, depression, dull, and genres of music that are slow and depressing. The colours make the audience feel calm, relaxed, or in deep thing and in a good mind to read about the artist, especially if they are already fans of the artist.
The article supports the artists style as it is dull and the colours are dark, which we assume that is the genre of the music as well. The overall layout of the article is smart and looks formal as it is addressed to the one reader. The text is simple, black writing on a white background, just like reading a letter.
The article implies that the artist is releasing more songs, or more information as it says the word “more” in the title, which suggests they’re doing something extra, or having a comeback. This shows that the purpose is to reintroduce the artist to the reader, and promote them, the article is to inform the reader about them, to gain more fans, or keep their fans engaged.
Again, the text is written in letter style, with black and white, in columns like a letter, or a newspaper, which is quite formal, so the presentation is clearly aimed at an older audience, who don’t care as much about the “cool” fonts and colours, but care about the actual information within the article. The artist is represented as quite reserved, and not that popular as they’re not shown much on the article so may have a smaller audience, so they don’t care about attracting new fans as much as they do about updating them.
The tone of the article is quite straight forward, not “happy” but fairly passive as there isn't much emotion on the image, or around the article. The mode of address was more personal, and formal than the other magazines rather than talking to a wide range of people, this gives the feel of attachment for fans, but detachment for people who don't know the artist.
The image does not fit with the article in any way apart from the fact they both look quite boring and dull, other than that the photo seems quite mysterious whereas the article seems fairly blunt, and straight to the point.
